Fashion Magick is when we infuse intention into what we wear.
The Frida Vest~
Fashion Magick AFFIRMATION:
“When I wear this Frida vest I’m brave.
I accept the light, dark, weird, and unique parts of myself.
“BE YOU” says to the world that I am beautiful exactly the way I am. And I choose to differentiate from beauty norms.
I live as me, for me.

This Frida Vest is my first upcycle design.
When I found the jacket (that I turned into a vest) I wanted to adorn it with a rock n roll or feminist statement.
Then I found Frida Kahlo.
I thought, Frida is a perfect icon for the my jacket!
Everyone loves Frida Kahlo as a feminist figure.
But soon, my process made me face part of me that isn’t feminist at all.
I got so see~
that I wanted Frida because she’s popular.
I started to make the jacket pretty, and I didn’t take many risks.
Then at some point I felt repelled by it.
When I looked it, it had become the opposite of what FRIDA actually stands for.

Frida shows ALL herself ~ as she explores herself.
She paints what she sees, the good, the bad and the ugly.
She painted her body deformities.
She showed off her mustache and her unibrow.
She wore men’s clothing in a time when no one did so.
And then she continued to develop her own body altar, based on what she saw as female empowerment.
She never followed the norms.
Frida didn’t care about being liked!
She was about being TRUE to herself.
So, my jacket now says “BE YOU” on it.

~ I sewed a mustache on her image ~
Frida as an icon has become very popular today.
However many of her images are mass produced. They show her with a white washed face, with no mustache and a minimized unibrow.
This is everything Frida was against!
In making her more consumable for the masses, we take away her message.
When I realized I was showing off one of her mass produced images,
I proudly, sewed a mustache on her. And I emphasized her unibrow.
Unfortunately, the embroidery thread made the mustache TOO pronounced.
And luckily, taking out the thread ~ left a nice, natural looking mustache.
Frida’s portraits aren’t ALL about her mustache after all.
I just want to accurately portray her statement… the way i understand it.
